Psychological manipulation
Psychological manipulation is a type of social influence that aims to change the perception or behavior of others through underhanded, deceptive, or even abusive tactics. By advancing the interests of the manipulator, often at the other’s expense, such methods could be considered exploitative, abusive, devious, and deceptive.
Requirements for successful manipulation
According to George K Simon, successful psychological manipulation primarily involves:
1. manipulator concealing aggressive intentions and behaviors.
2. manipulator knowing the psychological vulnerabilities of the victim to determine what tactics are likely to be the most effective.
3. manipulator having a sufficient level of ruthlessness to have no qualms about causing harm to the victim if necessary.
How manipulators control their victims
Harriet B Braiker identified the following basic ways that manipulators control their victims:
Praise, superficial charm, superficial sympathy, excessive apologizing, gifts, approval, attention. Sulking, playing the victim role (“poor me”), emotional blackmail, denial, evasion, diversion, intermittent reinforcement.
Personalities of manipulators
Avoidant personality, machiavelli personality, borderline personality, addictive personalities.
Vulnerabilities exploited by manipulators
“disease to please”, addiction to earning approval, emotophobia, lack of assertiveness to say no, blurry sense of identity, too trusting, too greedy, too lonely.

我鍾意”superficial charm, superficial sympathy”, “emotional blackmail” (十個讚)
抵禦操控者的方法:分辨自己真正需要甚麼,拒絕虛妄的甘言幻象,用行動實踐。
The manipulation of obedience to authority in Seligman’s experiment is an extreme case, a true trauma.
But psychologiests also manipulate positive mental process such as collaboration and altruistic behavior. To me it is a totally neutral term. Human inhale oxygen as well as tobacco smoke, we should not be afraid of inhaling simply because some people apply it in smoking.
not necessarily always negative.
